By some unfathomable means, you are stripped of your vehicles. Now you can buy only one car, and it has to be a Corolla. Remember: this is your only car for the indefinite future. Choose wisely. Here’s a link for some examples:

The Matrix, Vibe, and various Prizms and Colts are also fair game.
Go!

Of course, there is the allure of the AE86:

Backwards Corolla!

Which trim though? That determines if you get an LSD and the glorious 4AGE.

I’ll take a KE70 Wagon. Thanks.

Doesn’t matter. Wash it weekly and get good tires.

What about a Corolla that’s also a Tercel?

The traction isn’t the issue. It can’t be that bad.

I had this car! It was really slow, but strangely fun. The handling was pretty awful, and it was rusted to crap, but I kinda miss it. So easy to park.

Then it will rust out from under you if you don’t seal it.

Maybe yours was too worn out, mine handled pretty good. In fact in road tests when it was new it handled better than the RWD corollas (not that that is saying too much).

Hrrrnnnn.... So perfect. Waaaanttt.
I saw one in the junk yard yesterday. It was an automatic, but it made me sad anyway.

‘90 Prizm GSi with a 4A-GE 20V Silvertop swap, C160 6-speed w/LSD, Tom’s Carbon airbox kit, Tom’s ecu, and suspension upgrades of some sort (not sure what).

SAVE IT! Transmissions for these are dirt cheap and 16V 4As are hardy.

E70 4AGE red top n/a 200hp and a 12k redline. Must be wagon.

Not familiar with those. I want whatever Takumi had in Initial D

It was the spec engine for FA in the 90s and (IIRC) early 2000s. It’s a 4AGE tuned to put out up to 240 hp if you want to rebuild every few thousand miles with a 12k redline. It’s glorious.

Replacing the struts helped, and I’m sure it was better than many cars of the day. Just alot of body roll.

Now normally I’d go for an AE86 or similar. But I’ve seen what a corolla SR5 can do in Forza. So now I want one.

I’m going to look that up.

Wait, if Vibetrixs are fair game... what isn’t fair game?
Because there is a lot of stuff based on the Corolla.
I would say Celica GT-S - new enough that it might not rust IMMEDIATELY, still should be quite fun - but I don’t know if you’re going to count that as a Corolla or an Avensis. I would argue that the Avensis is an embiggened Corolla with IRS, though, and the Celica GT-S is a Corolla with the Avensis’s IRS, IIRC. And, now that the Auris is being sold as a Corolla in the US, the IRS-based Corollas are part of Corolla canon.
Also, I actually own a Toyota product that’s based on the same platform as the next Corolla, and shares a wheelbase with the current Corolla... but I’m not sure if I’d pick it as my only car ever, even though I like it.

I spent two years looking for a good SR5 but could never find one
![]() 09/01/2016 at 12:05 |

The way I see it, the Matrix is actually called the Corolla Matrix internationally, so it’s a Corolla. And the Vibe is just a rebadged Corolla.
![]() 09/01/2016 at 12:20 |

Yeah, if mine had been an SR5 (and not so rusty), I probably would’ve tried harder to keep it.
![]() 09/01/2016 at 12:28 |

OK, I guess I’ll go with a Matrix XR-S or Vibe GT?

Toyota Corolla E90 liftback, with the 16 valve 1.6. Nothing fancy, just an excellent compact car for the late 80s.

Choose from:
TE27
AE86
AE101 Sedan or Wagon 4WD (With a 4AGZE swapped in and must have touring wagon nose either way)
